Black & Grey in Andenne

Black ink diluted into grey, from the lightest to the deepest, for volume, texture and relief.

Definition

Black & grey works with light. A single ink, black, thinned into successive washes to build a whole scale of greys. This is the style of volume and depth: vanitas, portraits, drapery, pieces with relief where the shadow does everything. It is also the studio's most realistic register: not photographic reproduction, but a realism of shadow and texture.

The result is decided in the healing as much as in the session: a well-laid gradient keeps its softness for years. Sophie builds her values from light to dark, to stay in control of the final contrast.

Who it's for

black & grey is for you if

  • You like relief. Volume, texture, the light turning around a subject.
  • You are thinking portrait, vanitas or drapery: grey renders what line alone cannot.
  • You want a piece with depth without going through colour.
  • You are happy with longer sessions: a gradient is built patiently.
Good to know

What Sophie will tell you at your consultation

  • The lightest greys lighten further as they heal: Sophie lays them down accordingly.
  • A large piece is done over several sessions, with full healing between each one.
  • Contrast holds better on even skin than at creases and joints.
  • A light touch-up is sometimes scheduled after healing, to revive the softest greys.
